Certain families come with a lot of expectation. Wealthy families, illustrious families, know for particular tricks and trades. That's the kind of family that Alexander Yelisarov was born into — wealthy and illustrious all at once. A family with certain ambitions for its children, put in place long before they even came into the world. Aliona and Mikhail Yelisarov were both very capable witches, belonging to demonic and unnatural lines respectively, but Mikhail was ultimately better suited to the arts of business and making money. Aliona was the builder of their reputation, though. She was a monster hunter.
The middle of three children, Alexander — known affectionately as Sasha, a diminutive he never particularly desired to shrug off, in later life — was sandwiched between an elder sister and younger brother. Larissa was effectively the jewel in the family crown. A perfect mix of her parents, intellectual in material ways and also of the demonic line, she brought together all the things that Aliona and Mikhail admired in each other. It set the bar quite high for their future children. Eugene, unfortunately, was not quite as disciplined as his older sister. Once again, inclined towards the demonic line (a theme amongst all Yelisarov children), he was the family's trouble maker. Eugene always clashed with both his parents and his sister. Never Sasha, however. Sasha, he was always the happy middle.
Although he was born in St. Petersburg, the majority of Sasha's formative years were lived on the southern coast of Spain. The Yelisarovs moved there when Sasha was three years old; Larissa was seven, and Eugene was born less than a year later. As such, all three children grew up slightly different, influenced by the changes in their home lives.
Sasha would be the first to admit that his childhood was broadly uneventful. He was a shy boy, and although his parents had high hopes for him to follow in Larissa's footsteps, this eventually proved to be an unlikely outcome. He didn't have the temperament required for success in business or monster hunting. A soft heart, lacking in assertion and confidence. Of all the things that Aliona particularly pushed Sasha to do in his childhood — various martial arts, sports, etc — nothing particularly stuck. Except for dancing.
Ballet was only supposed to be a supplementary activity, excellent for strengthening the body, the core and coordination, but it became a lot more to Sasha. Long after his parents stopped paying for dance lessons, Sasha would spend all of his own allowance and any money he made himself on continuing them.
After attending a small international magic school, Sasha was accepted into CSTA. To this day he wonders if this was based on merit or the fact that his father knew the right kind of people; he never considered himself to be the most talented or capable of students, mostly because he never felt very connected to his magic. The demonic line is connected to destructive, aggressive spirits, and Sasha is neither of these things. Specifically, his magic is that of being able to essentially absorb demonic spirits and temporarily take on their powers for his own. (In short, he is a demon sponge.) With this magic comes the constant threat of possession, at the same time as making Sasha something of a target for ambitious demonic spirits that consider the possibility of making him their vessel.
Sasha treasures the years he spent at CSTA. Though it did not quite improve his relationship with his magic as his family hoped, it helped him grow as a person and be less hidden within his own head. That, and it was where he met his future husband.
Konstantin Scala was a final year student that also served coffee in a cute campus cafe. Though Sasha himself was freshly graduated, his friends still attended CSTA, and that was when their paths crossed. It took a lot of red faced visits, countless orders of coffee and multiple short, blathered conversations for Sasha to give Konstantin his phone number, expecting nothing from this exercise in futility and embarrassed. Except Konstantin called him; they went on a date. It's history from there.
After a very solid seven years together, Konstantin and Sasha got married. Despite his mother's background in monster hunting, Sasha never took issue with the fact that Konstantin was half mermaid, and always endeavoured to support him in any struggles he had with it. Both Konstantin's heritage and the fact that he was a man didn't sit well with Sasha's parents, but Sasha was simply uninterested in trying to steer his life according to their directions anymore. Konstantin was his choice, his happiness.
Then the prick had a mermaid related crisis and disappeared for roughly half a year, without so much as a by your leave. This crushed Sasha, vindicated his mother, and caused him to temporarily move home. To Sasha's relief, Konstantin returned to him eventually, once he had mastered and become at peace with his mermaid half. They picked up the scattered pieces between them, and mended them. It took time, but they managed.
For a few years, they were allowed a little peace. They moved from Konstantin's Madrid apartment to a coastal town, where they found a gorgeous little apartment for themselves above what they then turned into a coffee shop of their own. Then, Larissa died.
Traditionally, Aliona had always taken her children on simpler hunts when they were young, to acclimatise them to one of the possible futures she hoped for them. In time, she stopped taking Sasha and Eugene, realising that her sons were either unfit for the role or too stubbornly unwilling, where Larissa had far more drive to succeed. As such, this mother-daughter activity continued onward into Larissa's adulthood, with her and Aliona going on more and more dangerous expeditions as the years went on.
There was nothing that could have been done, no precautions that either Aliona or Larissa could have taken to change the outcome of this hunt, save for not going on it at all. Larissa lost her life in a botched hunt, at the claws of a creature that very nearly killed Aliona also, and could not be properly identified. Despite his differences with his siblings, Sasha loved them both, dearly and desperately, and Larissa's death devastated him. His relationship with his mother began to disintegrate even more, already damaged by his unwavering loyalty to Konstantin, but it wasn't until Eugene followed in Larissa's fate that Sasha effectively cut ties.
Eugene and Larissa held little love for each other, on the surface. They were polar opposites in personality, in goals, but they had loved each other nonetheless, so often brought together by the calming bridge that Sasha extended between them. Also wrecked by Larissa's death, Eugene went off the rails. Where Sasha quietly held his mother in contempt for Larissa's fate, his brother was loud about it. Perhaps the worst part was that Eugene died in a comparatively unremarkable way, in a way that anyone could die — knocked down, while drunk, by a similarly intoxicated driver. Prior to Larissa's death, Eugene had been rebellious, but never excessive. As ever, Sasha had been trapped in the middle, the lighter version of both his siblings, quieter, more reserved, never at the fore. Now, he was the last of them.
The quick succession in which he lost both his brother and sister shook Sasha to the core. It's now been two years since he last had any contact whatsoever with his parents, and he now very firmly dedicates his time to his husband, running the finances of their coffee shop.
PERSONALITY: On the most basic level, Sasha is an enormous loser.
It's the easiest way to describe him — a good 90% of any given day is spent blushing, embarrassed or apologising for something. From his youth he was always a boy full of excessively good manners and timidity, and though the latter is less true these days, the former remains. He's sweet. Naturally inclined to be kind, a worrier, a mother hen that'll follow his friends and loved ones around like chicks that need protecting if he has to. He severely lacked confidence until somewhere in his mid-twenties; the effects of having a very overbearing and intense mother were hard to shake off, but he did, making way for his good humour to shine through beyond his nerves. He never had difficulty making friends, as such, but for a long time he struggled with opening up that little bit more, of being as goofy and cheeky as he often felt inside. Now, he is very laid-back. He doesn't struggle with the idea of interacting with strangers, and though he's still likely to blush his way through a conversation, he'll own his missteps rather than apologise for them.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given his magic abilities, Sasha is the kind of person that easily absorbs the moods and energies of those around him. He's easily influenced by the immediate atmosphere, which also loosely translates into his being able to give as good as he gets. For his timidity and unwillingness to put himself out there, he's not someone you can walk all over. Unless you're his mother. Generally speaking, however, if Sasha disagrees with an opinion, a demand, he won't take it lying down. Though he would prefer to avoid conflict however he can, he won't avoid it if it means being untrue to himself.
Sasha is incredibly affectionate, once he establishes that it's okay to be that way with whoever he's laying the affection on. He's appalling in his loyalty; he would much rather give someone the benefit of the doubt than change his mind about them, which goes some way to explain why he never gave up on waiting for Konstantin to come back to him. If he could give everyone that needed it some love, he would do. He likes to look after people and make them feel good about themselves, perhaps in part because he lacked that kind of attitude in his own life when he was younger.
The only time that Sasha changes at all, really, is when he is possessed. Generally, Sasha does not lose complete control during possessions; it's like having two consciousnesses crammed inside one head, and the trespassing one has hijacked his motor control. He gets himself into trouble, when possessed. The memories of the events never come back to him properly, becoming a disjointed series of flashbacks that slowly return to him after he's back in control of his body and the demonic spirit is ejected. That said, Sasha is confident in the fact that ultimately, the only person he's really hurt in the process of being possessed is himself. He's never endangered the life of another person during his stints of possession; the idea has always been to rile the spirit enough just to take it out on his body, and no one else. There's been a few fights, here and there, but that's the worst of it.
Upon arriving in Eudio, however, Sasha is going to be a bit sluggish. More details on why are touched upon in the incentive section, but he's recovering from a prolonged possession that's left him feeling a bit weak. Prone to sleeping for the majority of a day, generating little to no body heat, physically exhausted from even small tasks. Although invariably the representatives of Eudio would offer to bring Sasha back to full health, he would refuse; Sasha is not a prideful person, but he is deeply disappointed in what he perceives as his weaknesses. To him, he needs to recover from the possession in his own time not just to prove that he can, but sort of as a punishment for getting himself into such a state in the first place. He's going to be feeble and slightly bed-ridden for roughly a month, but considering that he and Konstantin are both arriving here at the same time, he won't be lacking for either good care or intimacy, as the two of them have a habit of being attached like limpets to each other.
INCENTIVE: Following the recent turmoil that struck his family, Sasha made attempts to step his magical game up and become better at control and handling his own power. This came from equal parts a desire for taking revenge against the monster that took his sister, and a fear that he would not be strong enough to protect himself or Konstantin from some kind of possible future danger. To begin with, he felt as though he was making progress — but not for all that long.
Sasha's incentive is to have his magic completely removed. His attempts to improve on his magic just made him more of a promising target for ambitious demonic spirits. Possessions were frequent from his late teens to his mid-twenties; it never went on for too long, eight hours at the most, with Sasha having enough influence still over his body to stop anything particularly terrible happening (a matter that'll be covered some more in the consent section). However, right now Sasha would be arriving in Eudio fresh from a possession that lasted over a week. He's sick of the control that his magic has over him and not the other way around, sick of his inability to master it, and thus believes he's incapable of doing so. He feels like he makes himself more of a risk by trying to beat it, so he would much rather make himself utterly harmless.
The finer details of the possession are broadly unremarkable, as the spirit that took over Sasha's body was not the destructive sort that would immediately cause havoc, but a festering kind. It wanted to plan, bide its time, and thus did little other than take Sasha's body for an unauthorised spin. The physical effects, however, as outlined in the personality section, are what have hit Sasha the hardest this time around. He just wants to stop ever having to feel like this again, feeling so weak and so feeble and like he could end up doing something awful against his will.
FIT: Almost five years married, content and settled in both himself and his relationship, Sasha is perhaps a better fit for Eudio now than he ever would have been before. He's very comfortable in expressing his affection for others, having had so many years to practice with his domestic piranha of a husband. His loyalty to Konstantin is unwavering, so the vast majority of the physical intimacy he'll be generating will be with him, but he's a tactile person that'll happily engage in contact with friends, and perhaps more if he and Konstantin have a mutual understanding on that part. Which is to say, they come as a package deal, so prepare yourself for triple trouble. Or something. Maybe something that sounds less like a creepy new porn category. He's sociable, easy-going and friendly — and once he's back to his full health, he's got one or two ideas about getting people in Eudio paired up via dance classes.
CONSENT: For the fact that his own consent has so often been thrown out of the window due to possessions, Sasha values it immensely. He knows what it's like to have something done to you without you asking for it or wanting it, and thus would never do anything to make another person feel that way. He's confident that even during his possessions, he never allowed anything awful to happen to anyone but himself; it's one of his worst fears, to hurt someone (physically or emotionally) in that way.
